Forced Marriage

Forced marriage is when a marriage takes place without the consent of both people involved. It is illegal and is considered a form of domestic abuse.

The effects of forced marriage can involve being subjected to emotional, mental, sexual, or physical abuse, both before the marriage takes place and also within the marriage itself.

  • Both men and women can be victims of forced marriages
  • Forced marriage isn’t limited to one religion
  • Marriage can be seen as a ‘solution’ if it is suspected or known that the person at risk are LGBTQ+
  • Older family members can be forced into marriage to avoid the ‘shame’ of being unmarried
  • Disabled children can be forced into marriages even though they may not be able to make the decision to marry in the first place

We believe that people have the right to choose who they want to marry. We are here to support those who have had decisions they haven’t agreed to, or been persuaded into marrying someone they didn’t want to.
