International Zero Tolerance Day for FGM Exhibition

Building on the success of the Savera UK Youth Conference and hard-hitting film #StopTheWedding, Savera UK Youth participated in a project with the National FGM Centre to mark the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation on February 6, 2019, which helps to raise awareness about this often hidden crime.

The project culminated in an exhibition and Savera UK Youth’s participation at The National FGM Centre’s seminar on February 6 2019 in London.

Leading experts gathered at the seminar to explore the medical aspects of FGM, the medical challenges of identifying FGM and implications for the law.

During three sessions in January 2019, Savera UK Youth members spoke to a survivor of FGM about her experiences and also representatives from Savera UK, to learn more about the practice.

Savera UK Youth members also participated in a session with photographer, Andrew AB, who shared photography tips that enabled them to use disposible cameras, so they could interpret their understanding of FGM through photography.

Working with AB, the young people curated an exhibition of outstanding photographs that represented their feelings about FGM, carefully naming the collection. The participants also worked with artist Joanne Tremarco and poet Kiara Mohamed add further elements to the exhibition.

Joanne assisted in the creation of collages and stop motion pieces to futher express and illustrate youth members’ feelings around FGM, while Kiara helped them to create poetry around the topic, which were read at the seminar in London. They also handed out wax-sealed letters of positivity to seminar delegates, written during their session with Kiara.

The feedback from seminar delegates was extremely positive and Savera UK Youth looks forward to further projects with the National FGM Centre.

Savera UK Youth will be launching this exhibition in the North West as part of UK Parliament Week, find out more here.

I’m blessed to have taken part and can’t wait for projects in the future – Ayo Folarin, Savera UK Youth Participant at National FGM Centre seminar.
